3 “Hippie” Healing Methods That Actually WORK!

hippie

What if I told you that amazing health was as simple as going barefooted, gazing at the sun and communing with nature and our surroundings?

Well, you might be forgiven for thinking that I’d drunk one too many green smoothies or gone all hippie like (!) however it turns out that recent scientific discoveries are revealing that this is EXACTLY what we need to do for optimum health.

Even more interesting is the fact that our ancestors practiced these healing modalities thousands of years ago and it’s only thanks to modern science that we can verify the wisdom of these ancient rituals.

Best of all, they don’t cost a cent!

So here they are…

3 “hippie” healing methods that actually WORK.

1: Earthing

earthing

Have you noticed that when you go on holiday, walk barefooted in the sand or swim in the sea, you automatically have a heightened sense of well being? Turns out it’s more than just the time away from work or the smell of salty air…

Earthing (also known as grounding) was rediscovered and brought to light by researcher, Clint Ober, and has been described as the most amazing health discovery ever.

In today’s world we’re exposed to a variety of harmful positively charged electrons, whether in the form of electromagnetic fields (EMF’s) processed foods, air pollution or everyday stressors – all of which can contribute to inflammatory conditions, aching muscles and joints and an array of health problems.

The Earth emits negative electrons and when we’re grounded these positive electrons are neutralised and inflammatory processes are halted. Just as the sun provides us with energy and vitamins, the earth too is a subtle source of energy that promotes physical and emotional well being.

Earthing is as simple as going barefooted or having direct skin contact with the ground, however with the advent of rubber soled shoes many of us can go months or even years at a time with without any direct contact with the earth.

The most conductive surfaces are sand, grass, gravel, dirt and concrete. Wood and ashphalt are not conductive.

Earthing products such as bed sheets and mats provide a convenient method of connecting with the Earth when it’s otherwise impractical – such as sleeping, working in an office etc. These are simply plugged into the earthing wire of electrical outlets.

There are many studies proving the amazing health benefits of grounding and these include:

  • A reduction in inflammation
  • Reduces or eliminates chronic pain
  • Improved quality of sleep
  • Thins blood and improves blood pressure
  • Relieves muscle tension and headaches
  • Lessens hormonal and menstrual symptoms
  • Accelerates recovery from intense exercise
  • Cancelling out potentially harmful EMF’s (electromagnetic frequencies)

2: Sungazing

Sungazing

Sungazing is the ancient practice of gradually introducing sunlight into our eyes (looking directly at the Sun) at the lowest ultraviolet index times of the day.

Modern science reveals that exposure to sunlight via the eyes directly stimulates the pineal gland which is responsible for producing melatonin, which in turn maintains circadian rhythms and regulates reproductive hormones. Melatonin also enhances the immune system, results in a deeper, more restorative sleep and is a natural mood elevator.

Interestingly, our ancestors revered the pineal gland (also known as the ‘third eye’) as it was known to enhance creativity, intuition and even develop psychic ability.

Sungazing was rediscovered by Hira Ratan Manek (abbreviated to HRM) and he recommends to begin with only 10 seconds the first day and increase by 10 second intervals each day until you have completed 45 minutes of total sungazing time. This takes approximately 9 months at which time the practice can cease.

(Other proponents of sungazing recommend 10 to 30 minutes as often as possible and as a lifelong practice.)

Not only do regular sungazers notice improved vision, they also have more robust immune systems, have little to no depression and have a more positive outlook.

Nb: Sungazing should ONLY be practiced within 1 hour of sunrise and 1 hour of sunset as these are the times when the UV index is at 0. This is very important as exposure outside these times can cause eye damage.

3: Meditation

meditation

Meditation is an age old practice that is gaining wider acceptance around the world.

Brain imaging scans performed on Buddhist monks reveal the powerful effects of meditation, in particular there is a profound increase in brain activity in the prefrontal lobe which is associated with positive emotion, creativity and happiness.

Meditation also reduces activity in the right hemisphere of the amygdala which is associated with negative emotion and fear.

Long term meditators report lower levels of stress, less reactivity, more self confidence and an increased sense of well being.

There are a number of ways to meditate and these include repeating a mantra or positive affirmation, focusing on an object or symbol that has personal relevance, or it can be as simple as being 100% present in the moment.

As little as 10-20 minutes per day can have dramatic and ongoing positive effects in your life.

Just as exercise is for the body, meditation is for the mind.

How I Incorporate Eathing, Sungazing and Meditation Into My Daily Life

Like many of you reading this blog I have time challenges and therefore need to be very efficient with my time.

For this reason I like to combine all 3 modalities.

For example, while standing barefooted in the sand (the beach is my preferred location) I’ll gaze at the sun for up to 20 minutes within 1 hour of sunrise. During this time I tune into my breathing, calm my mind and focus on being present in the moment.

I’ll do this as often as possible however the frequency depends on my schedule, weather conditions etc.

I’ve practiced meditation for almost 20 years, however since introducing sungazing and earthing I’ve noticed subtle (yet noticeable) health benefits – namely more energy, clarity and peace of mind.

Have you tried earthing, sungazing or meditation?
